Anecdotes

Let us tell you about some events that happened during the last years of the German Cosplaychampionship. We had a lot of memorable experiences and we want to share some of them with you now. If you also know of an interesting story that should be told here, then let us know!

The precursor of the DCM has been a Cosplay competition which took place in the Comic Corner at the Frankfurt Book Fair. The organizers of the FBM hoped for 50 visitors to appear at that time, dreaming of 100. The tiny stage whose dimensions roughly corresponded to those of today’s jury tables has been separated from the rest of the center with walls of plexiglas. So far so good. The problem was that neither 50 nor 100 spectators came but around 500, all huddled in front of the “stage”. One can imagine that it’s been really crowded. The person in charge, who has seen just her first Cosplay competition, has been so excited that her strong, loud and copious applause caused a muscle to tear which had to be treated in the infirmary.

In 2009, the new German Cosplaychampion Daniela rose the interested of one of the most famous mangaka teams in the world. Daniela had won with her adaptation of Sakura from the manga “Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles” by CLAMP. As so often at the finals some representatives of Japanese manga publishers sat in the audience, including the Japanese publisher of “Tsubasa” who brought the news of his experiences in Germany forthwith to Japan. CLAMP, who saw the  costume and appearance, then let us know how impressed they were by our winner, saying her a compliment.

As the former Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher has been a guest at the Frankfurt Book Fair, he quickly became aware of the many dressed people on the fair ground. Highly interested he wanted to know what this Cosplay is all about. Unfortunately he did not accept an invitation to the DCM finals.

In 2010, a person dressed up as a nurse generated a great excitement. Various Cosplayers gave her compliments about her ingenious costume and of course she was happy about that. At the same time she wondered why so many people pointed out that the red cross on her uniform could lead to misunderstandings  since she may be mistaken for a real nurse. The point was: She in fact was a real nurse who just did her job at the Book Fair. Of course it took some time before she realized the connection between her dress and the Cosplayers running around.

Our participant support Daniela recieved a call really early in the morning on a preliminary day 2015. Half asleep she answered the call and got asked “Do you panties for me?”. Extremly confused Daniela answered she needed the panties for herself . Later she found out that they meant a privacy shield panties for visual cover.
